A document of our times

Eugene Borowitz, January 8, 1971

The anonymous letter writer, whom the editor considers as representative of many young Jews today, recounts how his theological struggles to reconicle his belief in a commanding God with a belief in the liberal value of autonomy have left him stuck and confused about where to pursue further Jewish studies: the Jewish Theological Seminary and its obligatory standards of halachic observances seems incompatible with autonomy and Hebrew Union College and its "Judaism and" approach seem dilute and inauthentic.
