By Samuel Grand, Elijah Bortniker

Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia, 1961

This is a study of the Hebrew Sunday School Society (HSSS) and the United Hebrew Schools and Yeshivos ("United"). These two institutions have served Philadelphia Jewry since the early 20th century and are being re-evaluated. This survey included a careful study of the curriculum and publications of the HSSS and "United", as well as an investigation of statistical data on enrollment in all branches, turnover of pupils, proportion of boys to girls, financial reports including tuition receipts, scholarship grants, allocations from Federation, disbursement for teacher salaries, administration and other items. Statistical tables are appended.
