A Look at American Jewry and American Jewish-Israeli Relations

By Alfred H. Moses

American Jewish Committee (AJC), 1987

This is a revised edition of an address presented by Alfred H. Moses at the joint meeting of the Israeli and American Advisory Boards of the Institute on American Jewish-Israeli Relations in Jerusalem on September 13, 1987. After a shock to the American Jewish community, as a result of Jonathan Pollard's arrest and Israel's involvement in the Iran arms scandal, some changes in American Jewish-Israeli relations have come into play. A deep examination of the American Jewish community shows that it holds a complex relationship with its Israeli counterpart, one that has been turning in a divisive direction. Nevertheless, these two communities share 3000 years of common Jewish history and culture that may still be able to hold them bound together.
