Needed: A Balanced View of Charitable Giving

By Paula Hyman

Jewish Agency for Israel (JAFI), December 1997

This article comes in response to the presentation of Dr. John Ruskay (found in this issue of the Journal), in which Ruskay objected to American philanthropists designating their funds for specific Israel-related causes and projects instead of large-scale federation projects. Here the author raises questions about Federation priorities and encourages direct contributions to Jewish causes both in American and in Israel, while advocating a balanced pattern of philanthropy. The article is a shortened version of her remarks, addressed to Dr. Ruskay's audience.
