David Ben-Gurion's Prescience

By Daniel Gordis

Josh Rolnick, The Sh'ma Institute, November 2011

Strangely, Israel's Declaration of Independence insists that "[The] recognition by the United Nations of the right of the Jewish people to establish their State is irrevocable." The language, though, is actually less odd than prescient. David Ben-Gurion, the declaration's unacknowledged author, intuited that November 29, 1947 was likely to be an aberration and that the United Nations might well decide to undo its momentous 1947 decision.
