The Jewish Identity Crack-Up

By David Singer

Jewish Agency for Israel (JAFI), June 1998

The author argues that the question of Jewish identity should be re-engaged in full honesty and seriousness. He dedicates most of the article to what he sees as the failure of Modern Orthodoxy, but also touches on the problems of Conservative and Reform Judaism. What all these movements have failed to do is build a positive model of Judaism that successfully synthesizes Jewish tradition and modernity. This, says the author, is a challenge of the first order.
