Confronting The New Historical Mood

By Richard G. Hirsch

World Zionist Organization (WZO), Fall 1978

I believe the Jewish people is about to enter a new historical mood. I use the term historical "mood" rather than historical "period", because a period is associated with clear-cut dates, events and economic and sociological developments, whereas a mood stresses psychological phenomena. I also intend to connote that whereas an historical period has a generally recognized beginning and ending, an historical mood, which is a state of mind, can overlap various historical periods. For the sake of my analysis, I propose that in modern times, the Jewish people can be characterized by two historical moods: the integration mood and the historical mood.
