Trends Among Contemporary American Jews, Focusing on Young Adults in Los Angeles

By Sarah Bunin Benor

June 2012

As we work to strengthen the Jewish future, we should be aware of several trends that have been observed among contemporary American Jews, with a focus on young adults in Los Angeles. It is not a given that Jews today will "engage Jewishly" (defined here as Jews doing things they see as Jewish) in their young adult years or even at all. If they do, they encounter multiple options for engagement, reflecting an increasingly diverse Jewish population and an interest in connecting over shared niche interests. This brief document introduces these trends and illustrates them using a metaphor from the music industry.
