Back to Basics

By Leonard Fein

Americans for Peace Now, January 2007

The author questions the reasons behind a refusal to explore the possibility of peace negotiations between Israel and Syria. While the reasons for this refusal have not been publicly stated, many propose that America vetoed these talks over anger about Syria's roll in sectarian conflicts in Iraq. There are those who feel as though Israel decide on its own to avoid these talks, unconvinced that the payoff of peace with Syria would be worth the political expenditure.
