Finkelstein and His Critics

By Michael Greenbaum

Jewish Theological Seminary of America (JTS), Rabbinical Assembly of America (RA), 1995

The author describes criticisms put forward by leaders within the Conservative Movement to the leadership and goals of Louis Finkelstein (chancellor of JTS from 1940 to 1972), and Finkelstein's responses to those critics. Further analysis of Finkelstein's leadership of JTS in context of the relationships between JTS and other Conservative institutions is also provided.
