Review of the Year (2002) in the United States: National Affairs

By Richard T. Foltin

American Jewish Committee (AJC), Jewish Publication Society (JPS), 2002

Memory had to reach back to the 1930s and 1940s for a period when Jews seemed to be so under assault on a global basis as in 2001, and in which the larger American society - indeed, civilization itself - seemed faced with such an immediate mortal threat. Months of mounting anti-Semitism abroad - granted legitimacy in international institutions through a campaign of isolation and delegitimization directed at Israel - was followed by the September 11 assault on America. The attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon that day provided American Jews with the cold comfort that Americans would now understand what Israelis had been going through since the outbreak of Palestinian violence a year earlier. There were also other matters on the national scene for Jews to address: preserving religious liberty, responding to a rise in domestic anti-Semitic hate incidents, and building a relationship with a new president.
