Ma'yan Journey - Spring 2003

By Rona Shapiro, Jill Hammer, Letty Cottin Pogrebin, Marcia Silverman

Ma'yan, Spring 2003

Ma'yan seeks to honor Jewish women leaders who seek to make the world hear the voices of those who have been excluded. Leading in this way requires risk. This issue is dedicated to leadership and the risks associated with leading. The first section celebrates women leaders in the past. Rona Shapiro writes on women who birthed the nation and contributed to the exodus from Egypt. Jill Hammer provides an overview of the women featured in the Women of Valor, who made difficult decisions and took risks. Letty Cottin Pogrebin wrote about the connection between fighting antisemitism and embracing feminism. The second section discusses the risks of leadership. Five Jewish women leaders in a variety of fields shared the most important risks they took while pursuing their leadership roles. Ma'yan interviewed Marcia Silverman, CEO of Ogilvy Public Relations Worldwide, about her successful management strategies to learn about how women's corporate leadership styles compare with men's and about how women can succeed in the business world. Elizabeth A. Sackler, PhD, president of the Arthur M. Sackler Foundation, is the featured woman leader for the changemaker profile.
