On Armenian Genocide, Politics Trumps Truth

By Leonard Fein

Forward Association, 2007

The word genocide might not have existed until 1944, but the first genocide of the 20th century took place in 1915, as the Armenian people were slaughtered and massacred by Turkey. Far from the valiant efforts of truth and reconciliation that some aggressors have taken, Turkey steadfastly refuses to acknowledge the atrocities committed. And the sad fact is, its political importance to Israel and the United States has rendered this discussion a non-starter.
