Rights of Return and Recognition Cannot Be Swapped

By Leonard Fein

Forward Association, 2010

Michael Oren and Benjamin Netanyahu are being disingenuous when proposing that Palestinians officially recognize the Jewishness of the State of Israel. For Palestinians who support peace and the two-state solution, they are already implicitly doing this, but Oren and Netanyahu are attempting to force Palestinians to relinquish the right of return in exchange for a symbolic act. While the peace process will certainly entail compromises, symbolic and concrete, this demand is a distraction and red herring on the road to peace.
