Treating J Street With a Little Respect

By Leonard Fein

Forward Association, 2011

Civility in political discourse is wonderful, but straining too hard towards courtesy and respect can turn civility into anemic political correctness. So it is with the debate in the Jewish community over J Street, the pro-Israel, pro-peace organization that has been vilified by the right. Afraid of being accused of being 'uncivil,' the defenders of J Street, or at least of open dialogue, have been silenced by a small band of vocal malcontents. Sometimes civility and candor cannot be reconciled, and it is time to disrespect those who vilify the peacemakers.
