Darfuri Helps Fellow Newcomers Get Start

By Leonard Fein

Forward Association, 2011

The inspiring story of a man we will call Hamza provides a parable of modern Israel, a feel-good story, cut short by a 'however.' Hamza is a refugee from Darfur, a man who survived imprisonment and torture to finish college, flee to Israel and advocate for refugee rights. But alas, just as the Jews were strangers in the land of Egypt, Hamza is a stranger in Israel, and he, and the 50,000 other asylum seekers are not welcomed. While international law prevents their deportation, they are kept in limbo, as second-class citizens.
