Music is the key to transforming a cause into a full-fledged social movement. Songs communicate a movement's message in concise and compelling ways, provide rousing calls to action, foster solidarity among activists, and bolster morale. When looking for a movement anthem, keep the following in mind: (1) the success of a movement anthem is never solely attributable to its musical qualities, (2) communal song is an essential quality for movement anthems, and (3) movement songs can claim the space of a movement.
