David Hartman's "Israelis and the Jewish Tradition: An Ancient People Debates its Future"

By Michael Gottsegen

CLAL: the National Jewish Center for Learning and Leadership, 2000

The title refers to David Hartman's book by the same name, which the author reviews in this article. Hartman attempts to develop a neo-Maimonidean Jewish philosophy that can appeal to the Modern Orthodox in Israel, and serve as a starting point for the development of a Jewish Israel public culture that secular and religious Israeli Jews can build and sustain together.
