From Tzedakah to Independence

By Yaakov Taitz

Jewish Communal Service Association of North America (JCSA), Summer 2007

The Jewish values of tzedakah and tikkun olam, as formulated by the Jewish sages, posit the transition to self-sufficiency as the highest goal, the author asserts. Therefore, the mission of Jewish vocational service agencies is to help clients become independent. The author reviews classical Jewish sources relevant to these concepts, and discusses their applicability to current practices.
