Statement of the President Opening the 63rd Annual Meeting of the National Conference of Jewish Communal Service

By Judah Shapiro

Jewish Communal Service Association of North America (JCSA), National Conference of Jewish Communal Service, Fall 1961

Dr. Shapiro introduces the conference that serves as the basis for the journal by restating its purpose: to analyze the impact that technological development has on Jewish communal service. In particular, he notes, "Probably never before were values and institutions under so much threat from the breakdown of the orderly flow of communal responsibility from one generation to another." Therefore, he dedicates the conference and the journal to the exploration of the transition of generations at the beginning of the 1960s:  "It is the purpose of our General Sessions to deal with social change and its effect upon the separation of the generations and in turn to examine the special Jewish qualities in this situation as well as the effect upon our communal institutions."
