Toward a Theory of Jewish Communal Service

By Charles S. Levy

Jewish Communal Service Association of North America (JCSA), National Conference of Jewish Communal Service, Fall 1973

This is the text of a presentation given by the author at the Annual Session of the Alumni Association of the Wurzweiler School of Social Work at the Annual Meeting of the National Conference of Jewish Communal Service in Philadelphia on May 29, 1973. The author notes that the relative unity of Jewish communal structure and services which existed in past eras has been displaced by a multiplicity of organizational forms. Still, he asserts, some conceptual order for Jewish communal service is necessary. He reviews common foundations, themes and bases on which a basic conception of Jewish communal service might be based.
