Extreme Makeover -- Synagogue Edition

By Ron Wolfson

Synagogue 3000, 2008

The author contends that synagogues ought to refurbish their spaces in order to make them more welcoming and appealing, drawing lessons from retail chains such as the Gap and Starbucks. The author suggests synagogues employ better signage, color photographs of clergy and staff on a wall near the office, placing couches in the lobby, and offering a Starbucks-quality coffee bar in order to attract, welcome and retain congregants.
