The Awkward Alliance

By Leonard Fein

Moment Magazine, February 1986

The author suggests that there are three elements which impel the Jews and the Blacks to unite: that both have known bondage; the vocation to make the world safe for Jews, Blacks, and God; and the common understanding that if America's Jews and Blacks cannot repair their own alliance, we are all in trouble. The author argues that to repair the alliance, we must develop mechanisms that enable us to confront our inevitable disagreements and to emphasize what unites us.
