From the Special Issue Editors

By Jeffrey R. Solomon, Larry S. Moses

Jewish Communal Service Association of North America (JCSA), Spring 2009

The editors of a special issue of the Journal of Jewish Communal Service reflect on its theme: fundraising in the Jewish community. Emerging from a long history of popular volunteerism in the early 19th century, Jewish philanthropy has evolved into primarily a large donor-based system. In a climate of economic change, the editors pose several questions about the future of Jewish philanthropy touching on funder accountability, the "Jewish" nature of Jewish philanthropy, and the effect of globalization on fundraising.
