Keeping Our Balance: Strong Governance in Challenging Times

By Marjory Kaplan

Jewish Communal Service Association of North America (JCSA), Spring 2009

The Jewish Community Foundation (JCF) of San Diego has thrived even during economic downturn by following the advice: "Be bold. Act soon. Move fast." The JCF, headed by a former Employee Relations Division manager of Bank of America, uses successful business management models, which include a rigorous planning process, goal tracking, customer service measures, and disciplined documentation and reporting. The organization also follows the lead of universities and hospitals by encouraging elderly donors to create legacies and endowments. As well, the JCF knows that funders want to invest their money smartly, and JCF ensures top quality governance over all investments. Finally, JCF is engaged in sharing these models around the country and seeks to generate new ideas through the spread of best practices.
