Today's Role of the Jewish Community Center in Jewish Education

By Gerald B. Bubis

Jewish Communal Service Association of North America (JCSA), National Conference of Jewish Communal Service, Fall 1972

The author explores the question of how to maximize educational experiences within Jewish Community Center (JCC) contexts without duplicating the efforts of other institutions, with an eye toward the social and cultural contexts in which the field is shifting. No Jewish institution can hope to shape the heart and mind of modern Jews to the degree that other forms and norms now touch and develop them, the author argues, but "Jewish islands" such as JCCs can provide an opportunity for re-nourishment, encouragement and experimentation.
