Retrospection, Prognostication, Innovation: A Conversation With Jerry and Ruby Bubis

By Marla Eglash Abraham, Steven Windmueller

Jewish Communal Service Association of North America (JCSA), Fall 2009

The authors interview Gerald Bubis, the first director of the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion's School of Jewish Communal Service, and his wife Ruby. The couple relates their involvement in the field of Jewish communal service over the previous 40 years, highlighting influential figures such as Alfred Gottschalk, Howard Charish, Norman Frimer, and Harold Schulweis. As well, Bubis describes major changes in Jewish communal service, such as a trend away from the dominance of universalism and a more sensitive inclusion of women.

(This double issue of the Journal of Jewish Communal Service is dedicated to SJCS, the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion's School of Jewish Communal Service).
