The Covenant of Jewish Professional Leadership

By Marsha Katz Rothpan

Jewish Communal Service Association of North America (JCSA), Fall 2009

Jewish communal service is a "field" rather than a "profession" because it lacks consistency in education requirement, standards of ethical practice, or oversight by a governing professional body. In order to help professionalize Jewish communal service, the Jewish Communal Professionals of Southern California created "The Covenant of Jewish Professional Leadership - Brit HaMiktzoa," which is a document that seeks to lay a foundation of standards, ethics, and behavior for the individual who identifies as a Jewish communal professional. The document includes such Jewish values as "the Jewish People," "Continuing Education," and "Philanthropy" and reflects many months of nuanced and passionate discussions. The future of Jewish communal service as a profession relies on the proliferation of such covenants and a heightened awareness among professionals of the need for a unifying set of norms.

(This double issue of the Journal of Jewish Communal Service is dedicated to SJCS, the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion's School of Jewish Communal Service).
