Building Progressive Jewish Community in Israel: The Leo Baeck Education Center

By Javier Simonovich

Jewish Communal Service Association of North America (JCSA), Fall 2009

The Leo Baeck Education Center in Haifa is a testament to the impact that Progressive Judaism is having on Israel. Not only does Leo Baeck provide a top-tier school but it also serves as a community center for the entire Haifa community: those who want to come into the center for their own enrichment, those who need help in their neighborhood, and those throughout the city who are rejected by others. This Community Center is an engine of social change, serving as a youth club for disadvantaged youngsters, a supermarket for new immigrants, and a meeting space for physically and mentally disabled individuals who work together on advocating for their social and civil rights. Progressive Jewish values of inclusion and pluralism are making a difference in Haifa, and the population of Israel would be well-served by the duplication of the Leo Baeck Education Center throughout the country.

(This double issue of the Journal of Jewish Communal Service is dedicated to SJCS, the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion's School of Jewish Communal Service).
