The Here-and-Now - An Evaluation of the "Rap Center" Concept

By Arthur Goldberg

Jewish Communal Service Association of North America (JCSA), National Conference of Jewish Communal Service, Spring 1973

The author offers a critical evaluation of the "rap center" (or drop-in center) intake method, which, he asserts, represents a response to community pressure for a quick and simple solution to a complex problem. Among a number of problems with this method identified by the author is that it tends to rely on anti-intellectual and anti-scientific methodologies, and that it appeals to impulse and an unrealistic desire for immediacy.
