The Future of Hillel from the Perspective of the University

By Marvin Fox

Hillel: The Foundation for Jewish Campus Life, 1974

The author describes, from the perspective of the university, and more specifically from the perspective of the university faculty, the special contribution that Hillel must make to Jewish students and to Jewish life on the campus as a whole. The author argues that Hillel should provide a dimension of Jewish experience in the university setting which no academic department as such can provide; encourage the expression of Jewish identity; and promote a commitment to Israel. The author then describes other areas which merit attention as Hillel plans for the future: the involvement of faculty members; Hillel's function as a bridge between university and community; and Hillel's role as a model exemplifying an authentic Jewish lifestyle.
