Helping our Members to Function as Part of the Community

By Donald Feldstein, William Kahn

Jewish Communal Service Association of North America (JCSA), National Conference of Jewish Communal Service, Winter 1967

The authors contend that all Jewish Center activities must be related to the "good citizenship goal" of helping individual community members interact with the larger community of which they are part -- which means not only helping Jews to interact with the Jewish community, but also with the larger (Gentile) community. Among the specific initiatives discussed are a dialogue group between Jews and African-Americans ("Negroes"), philanthropic activity, forum programs, home-centered Center programming, defending Soviet Jewry, and older adult social action.
