Touchstones for Jewish Living

By Dennis C. Sasso

Reconstructionist Rabbinical Association (RRA), Fall 2001

The author reviews Finding Each Other in Judaism: Meditations on the Rites of Passage from Birth to Immortality by Harold M. Schulweis, describing the book as a deeper appreciation of the spiritual and social powers inherent in the celebration and observance of the Jewish rites of passage. The author discusses how Schulweis' book is intent on overcoming the disconnection between rite and passage, seeking to connect believing with behaving. In doing so, the author argues that Schulweis' book provides for searching Jews and other religious seekers beautiful and meaningful touchstones for spiritual enrichment and interpersonal encounter at every stage in the life cycle.
