By Rita Chilow, Richard Ritman

B'nai B'rith Hillel Foundations Commission, Hillel: The Foundation for Jewish Campus Life, 1940

The Hillel Handbook's second edition, issued in 1940-1941, features a one-page description of 17 colleges in the United States, each outlining a brief history, current activities, and campus leadership. The book is dedicated to Alfred M. Cohen, Honorary President of B'nai B'rith, who oversaw the transformation of Hillel from a single-campus organization to a movement that had reached over 30,000 students in less than 20 years. The president and secretary of B'nai B'rith and the national director of Hillel write brief comments, and an essay contest commemorating Rashi's 900th birthday is announced.
