Empowering Judaism

By Beth Cousens

Josh Rolnick, The Sh'ma Institute, February 2010

The author reviews Rabbi Elie Kaunfer's Empowered Judaism: When Independent Minyanim Can Teach Us about Building Jewish Communities. She describes how the book challenges assumptions about the 1950s being the apex of the American synagogue and that religious participation in a formal organization was normative. The author advocates for self-leadership in religious life as a way of empowering and linking Jews within their communities.
