Knowing What We Need

By Sharon Strassfeld

Josh Rolnick, The Sh'ma Institute, February 2010

This piece reflects on the 40th anniversary in 2008 of Havurat Shalom (the oldest havurah in America) and the Jewish Catalog, the document that characterized the Havurah movement. The piece describes the core values of The Jewish Catalog, which includes a focus on small-scale Judaism as well as a do-it-yourself approach to Jewish life. The author concludes by affirming the value of Havurat Shalom by noting the present day programs that have been modeled off the Havurat Shalom and The Jewish Catalog.
