The New Jewish Organizing

By Steven M. Cohen

Josh Rolnick, The Sh'ma Institute, February 2010

This piece explores the recent growth of New Jewish Organizing, which is led primarily by younger Jews and focuses on specific areas such as new media and spiritual communities. The phenomenon breaks with past patterns of communal life, such that niche communities and small-scale projects are the foundation of the movement rather than large systems of organizations such as federations and community centers. The piece concludes by affirming the value of new Jewish organizing in terms of its ability to enrich, augment and challenge the current Jewish communal establishment.
