Discussion of Dr. Taft's Paper

By Marcia A. Leader

Jewish Communal Service Association of North America (JCSA), National Conference of Jewish Social Welfare, December 1949

The author discusses Dr. Jessie Taft's paper, "Time as the Medium of the Helping Process" in light of her own experiences as a social caseworker at the Menninger Clinic, a psychiatric hospital. Within this article, Leader discusses the function of the agency, and its specific structure, wherein psychiatrists are responsible for patient treatment and social workers are tasked with advising the patient's closest relatives. Moreover, the author focuses on the time issue in her agency, and remarks, 'we are just beginning to use time consciously as part of structure.' Finally, the author concludes by discussing the problem of establishing a time structure in an agency whose service is counseling or interviews, which in her view is different from that of the agency whose service is hospitalization and psychiatric treatment.
