The New English Translation of the Bible

American Jewish Committee (AJC), Jewish Publication Society (JPS), 1918

This document is based on the Preface to the Jewish Publication Society's new English translation of the Hebrew Bible. The need for the translation project is expressed: the need for an English version at all; the need for a new translation to replace the existing (Christian) translations of the Jewish Scriptures by a translation overseen by Jewish scholars, and presented in the Jewish traditional order; and the need to incorporate some conclusions of modern scholarship. The document further reviews the history of the project, and the methodologies employed in it. Examples comparing existing translations of certain verses to the new JPS translation are provided.
