Retirement Planning: A New Need

By David Rachlis

Jewish Communal Service Association of North America (JCSA), National Conference of Jewish Communal Service, Winter 1962

The author discusses trends in the burgeoning field of pre-retirement education, helping older individuals to plan and prepare for lower earnings, reduced mobility, health problems, identity issues, absence of routine, and abundant leisure time. The need is new, the author notes, since advances in health care have increased lifespans. He describes factors contributing to reluctance to face retirement, approaches these problems from the perspectives of role theory and disengagement theory, and describes elements of successful programs for dealing with these issues.
