Statistics of Jews (1922)

American Jewish Committee (AJC), Jewish Publication Society (JPS), 1922

The following is a report compiled by The Bureau of Jewish Social Research on Jewish statistics that are based largely on estimates made prior to World War I. However, this analysis takes into account boundary shifts due to post-World War I treaties, and new political subdivisions. On a more substantive level, then, the first section of the report deals with the "Jewish Population of the World By Continents," which includes detailed lists of the number of Jews residing in many of the world's countries. The second section, which deals with American Jewry, delves into the number of Jews per state, the number of Jews per region, a list of the leading cities in Jewish population, and a list of all American cities that are home to more than a thousand Jews, among other interesting charts. Then, the report examines Jewish immigration in a quantitative fashion, with lists of Jewish immigrants per year, immigrant deportations, and immigrant admissions and departures, among other topics covered. Finally, the report concludes with a look at Jewish immigration into Canada.
