The Jewish Basis for Shareholder Activism

By Mordechai Liebling

Reconstructionist Rabbinical Association (RRA), Spring 2005

Although shareholders often think of themselves as investors, they are actually (part) owners of the companies whose shares they hold. The author outlines the obligations of a property owner under Jewish law, including the duty to make sure his property does not cause harm to others, and exhorts Jewish shareholders to take advantage of corporation laws that permit groups of shareholders to exercise influence over corporation actions and practice responsible ownership.
