Making Our Synagogues Vessels of Tikkun Olam

By Mordechai Liebling

Reconstructionist Rabbinical Association (RRA), Fall 2003

The author notes that despite a high level of individual commitment to social justice as a Jewish value, on a congregational level Reconstructionist congregations fail to engage in either direct action or advocacy level social justice initiatives in any substantial measure. After speculating on the causes of this discrepancy and the religious implications, he suggests ways that synagogue communities can integrate tikkun olam into the life of the synagogue and the lives of congregants in a meaningful way.
