The Erotic Energy of the Rabbinate

By Lori H. Lefkovitz

Jewish Family & Life (JFL Media), December 2006

Lefkovitz examines the "erotics of pedagogyâ??- the erotic energy between teacher and student, a magnetism which is considered a feature of rabbinic calling. In todayâ??s world this erotic relationship, because of its potential of abuse, is circumscribed and regulated. However, according to Lefkovitz, a rabbi guilty of violation of sexual boundaries must abdicate his/her role before a process of teshuvah (repentance) is even possible. Lefkovitz further calls on a feminist analysis of charismatic leadership as the next agenda for Jewish feminism.
