On Rabbis and Rebbes

By Aryeh Cohen

Jewish Family & Life (JFL Media), December 2006

Cohen examines the Bet Midrash model as a means of creating a committed Jewish learning community. The Bet Midrash is a radically egalitarian place of teaching and learning, where teacher and leader must practice constriction and humility, pointing the way and then returning to the table as an equal participant. Cohen cites the biblical story of Korachâ??s challenge of Moshe for a more horizontal and less hierarchical community organization.
