Siyyum: Studying for Sustenance

By Jane Kanarek

Jewish Family & Life (JFL Media), December 2008

Kanarek examines the tradition of seudat mitzvah, a festive meal marking the completion of a commandment and the siyyum, a festive meal marking the conclusion of studying a Talmudic tractate. The siyyum ritual celebrates the deep engagement with our ongoing interpretative tradition, realizing that reading is a Jewish communal process.
