On the Margins

By Joshua Lesser

Jewish Family & Life (JFL Media), March 2009

A graduate of Orthodox day school, the author returned to his hometown as the gay rabbi of the only Reconstructionist synagogue in the state. He describes life as a rabbi on the margins, such as dealing with the tension between wanting to bring a visibility to a different and authentic model of Jewish leadership on the one hand and the magnification of that uniqueness on the other.
