Knowing the Ancestors

By Peter Metcalf

Jewish Family & Life (JFL Media), September 2003

An anthropologist describes the ritual of the people of Borneo, who summon the ancestors to a funeral through song. Through his fieldwork in Borneo, he found that an awareness of the ancestors puts into perspective the travails of our lives and what we can learn from them.
