Trampling Holiness

By Ruhama Weiss

Jewish Family & Life (JFL Media), September 2007

The author analyzes sections of Tractate Eruvin of the Babylonian Talmud, which opens with a guide to intimate, erotic Torah study. In light of the Talmudic discussion, the author asks, can a woman have the same experience with the Torah and the Hebrew language that men do? Can a sage have sex with a woman of flesh and blood? She investigates the relevance of several significant meetings of Rabbi Yehoshua ben Hananiah.
