When is a Jew? The Public Face of Jewish Authenticity

By Robert Hyfler

Jewish Family & Life (JFL Media), November 2004

Hyfler asks a series of questions that might help answer the enduring question of "who is a Jew?" He states that in an age of diversity and freedom, the authenticity of the Jewish world cannot be measured only by standards of personal Jewish background and practice. He believes that the Jewish community must create a global Jewish identity based on partnership and visions of a shared future, and should focus on the nature and value of Jewish structures that are meant sustain and expand Jewish life.
